Danish VAT, in short

01

One rate, 25 %

Denmark has a single standard VAT rate of 25 %, unchanged since 1992. Unlike most EU countries there are no reduced rates, so almost everything you sell carries the same 25 %.

02

The 50.000 kr. threshold

You must register for VAT once your sales pass 50.000 kr. within a 12 month period. If you expect to pass it, you register no later than 8 days before you do.

03

Some sales carry 0 %

A few supplies are zero rated rather than exempt, including newspapers published more than once a month, exports, and sales to businesses in other EU countries under the reverse charge.

04

VAT is not your money

You collect it on the state’s behalf and pass it on. The useful number in your own accounts is almost always the amount excluding VAT.

This is a calculator and a short explanation, not tax advice. For your specific situation, ask your accountant or check Skattestyrelsen.

Common questions

How do I add 25 % VAT?

Multiply the amount excluding VAT by 1,25. So 1.000 kr. excluding VAT becomes 1.250 kr. including VAT, of which 250 kr. is VAT.

How do I work out the VAT in a price that already includes it?

Divide by 1,25 to get the amount excluding VAT, then subtract. So 1.250 kr. including VAT is 1.000 kr. plus 250 kr. of VAT. A common mistake is taking 25 % of the gross amount, which gives 312,50 kr. and is wrong. The shortcut is to take 20 % of the gross amount.

When do I have to register for VAT?

When your sales exceed 50.000 kr. over a 12 month period. If you can see you are going to pass it, register no later than 8 days beforehand.

Does Denmark have a reduced VAT rate?

No. Denmark is unusual in the EU in having a single rate of 25 % with no reduced rates. Some supplies are zero rated or exempt, but there is no lower percentage band.

What about selling to another EU country?

Selling to a VAT registered business in another EU country you normally invoice without VAT under the reverse charge, and the buyer accounts for it. That depends on the buyer having a valid EU VAT number, which you can check for free.
